Picking the Right Area Rug Size

The number one question I get from my customers is, “What size area rug do I really need?”

The correct answer is, it depends.

Let's say you are interested in an area rug to go under your dining room table. You will want to make sure you have at least 2 – 2.5ft of extra room on each side of the table (4-5ft total) for the chairs to fit on top of the area rug. If you have end chairs with arms, you will need at least 2.5 – 3 ft of room at the ends of the area rug. The most common size of area rugs for dining rooms run 8×11 to 9×12 or larger.

The principal applies for round or square dining tables. Just measure the table and pick a rug that gives you 2-3 ft of room around the entire table for the chairs to fit correctly.
When it comes to buying round or square area rugs you might have to buy a larger area rug and have it custom fit to size. I can help you with that by giving you lots of options on how to do this. Often times I take a smaller area rug and stitch a custom carpet boarder around the area rug to get the right size or look and feel your after.

I will talk about how to pick the right sized area rug for your living room next.
