Shiraz Persian rugs combine the comfort and beauty of Persian hand-knotted rugs with the convenience and versatility of the modern lifestyle. Simple geometric designs and timeless colors characterize rugs made in Shiraz. When you buy a Shiraz rug from Rug Goddess, you’re purchasing a quality area rug that can give personality and a sense of tradition to your home.

What is the Origin of Shiraz Rugs?

Shiraz oriental rugs get their namesake from the city of Shiraz, the capital of the Fars province in the south of Iran. Shiraz rugs differ from other Persian-style rugs and feature the following characteristics:

Types of Materials

Cotton and wool are common in Shiraz carpets, with the occasional use of goat hair. The warps (vertical yarn threads) are made of wool or goat hair. The wefts (horizontal yarns) are two wool cords usually dyed dark brown or red after every row of knots. This gives Shiraz rugs a unique visual and tactile texture. Shiraz rugs are typically hand-knotted with wool piles of medium height.

Finishes in Rugs

Weavers usually finish both ends of the Shiraz rugs with knotted fringes. There are symmetrical and asymmetrical knots, ranging from soft to coarse to loose.

Some rugs may have flat areas at the ends before the fringes. This flat area is often intertwined with large strands of red, white, and blue yarn in a coarse check pattern.

The sides of a Shiraz carpet are stitched and enclosed using a single cord made of goat hair. Weavers sometimes reinforce the sides with extra strands of yarn. These strands are left outside, resulting in tufts on both sides.

Patterns and Colors

Shiraz rugs have a shape in the form of a medallion surrounded by geometric motifs and diamond shapes. In addition, the rug borders feature palm and pine leaf motifs surrounded by smaller bands.

Some rugs feature trees and animals, while other rugs highlight repetitive narrow perpendicular or rectangular shapes. There are also rugs depicting nightingales accompanied by a white horse that is angular in shape. Their distinctive designs lend them an old-world feel, making them ideal for traditional, transitional, and bohemian decor styles.

The colors traditionally used to dye Shiraz rugs were somber, often using dark browns and bright reds. However, some modern Shiraz-style rugs are also available in khaki and green colors.

Where Can You Place Shiraz Rugs

When you add a Shiraz rug to a room in your home, you can elevate the ambiance and make the space feel more luxurious. However, there are a few more ways these tribal rugs can help bring warmth and character to your home, in addition to their visual appeal.

Make Your Home Feel Grand and Welcoming

Placing a Shiraz tribal rug in an entryway makes visiting family members and friends feel welcome. Traditional red area rugs lend your home a sense of ancient beauty. Modern decorative elements, such as silver potted houseplants, scented candles, and geometric sconces, can enhance your entryway without appearing outdated.

Create an Intimate Setting

A Shiraz rug makes an eye-catching statement when placed against any wall color or flooring material. For example, if you want to use your living room as an extension of your dining room, setting the Persian rug under your dining table will add color and texture to the space while keeping it open for entertaining guests.

Brighten Up Your Room

You can achieve a dramatic look in a living room, bedroom, or home office with a dark-colored Shiraz rug. Adding this opulent accent to a wooden floor can make your bedroom appear more sophisticated. In addition, its complex Oriental patterns make it an ideal finishing touch for a home office.
