Trans-Ocean Area Rugs

Trans-Ocean and Liora Manne Rugs: Coastal Color, Indoors and Out

Trans-Ocean is one of the oldest rug importers in the United States, founded in 1908 and known today for the colorful indoor-outdoor and coastal rugs of award-winning designer Liora Manne. Trans-Ocean offers power-loomed outdoor rugs, hand-hooked and handwoven flatweaves, and hand-tufted wool rugs, with many styles in hard-to-find square, round, and runner sizes.

I'm Janice Wells, the Rug Goddess, and Trans-Ocean is one of my go-to lines for lanais, porches, kitchens, and beach-inspired rooms. After 25+ years of helping home and office clients, I love how Liora Manne's designs bring joy and color to a space while standing up to real life, from sandy feet to afternoon rain.

Below I share my favorite Trans-Ocean collections, how they are made, and answers to the questions my clients ask most.

About Trans-Ocean and Liora Manne

Trans-Ocean was founded in 1908 and has grown into a respected source for casual, lifestyle, and traditional rugs in a wide range of sizes and constructions. In 2025, Trans-Ocean was acquired by Lush Decor, a home fashions company, and Liora Manne continues as the brand's designer.

Liora Manne is known for bold, imaginative designs that combine art with function, from sea turtles and shells to palm fronds, waves, and playful pets. Her rugs make a casual space feel happy and inviting.

My Favorite Trans-Ocean Collections

Power-loomed indoor-outdoor rugs

The Liora Manne Carmel collection is a power-loomed polypropylene flatweave made in Turkey, with coastal designs like Shells, Sea Turtles, School of Fish, Dragonfly, Fronds, and Coral Border. The Malibu collection brings etched borders in the same easy-care construction, and the Marina collection offers waves, palms, coral, and circles in power-loomed outdoor-friendly fibers. These are perfect for patios, lanais, entries, and kitchens.

Capri, Monaco and Sorrento

The Liora Manne Capri collection is indoor-outdoor, with designs like Wave, Big Wave, Coral Border, Starfish Border, Turtle, and Jellyfish. The Monaco collection offers indoor-outdoor flatweaves with zebra stripes and bordered designs for sunrooms, kitchens, and patios. The Sorrento collection is a reversible, hand-woven indoor-outdoor flatweave in stripes like Rugby Stripe, Pinstripe, and Boat Stripe, and Sonoma adds sunny handmade flatweave stripes.

Hand-hooked indoor-outdoor rugs

The Ravella and Frontporch collections are hand-hooked indoor-outdoor rugs full of personality. Ravella features tropical leaves, palms, hibiscus, and zebra designs, and Frontporch is known for whimsical motifs like yellow Labs, lobsters, surfboards, compasses, and octopus, which make a cheerful welcome at your front door.

Hand-tufted wool for indoor rooms

For softer indoor comfort, the Corsica, Piazza, and Tivoli collections are hand-tufted wool rugs with water-inspired textures, dip-dyed watercolor stripes, and ombre borders. The Savannah collection is hand-tufted wool and cotton in India with cut and loop grid and checkerboard patterns, and Savoy offers swirling wool wave designs.

Square, Round and Runner Sizes

One of the best things about Trans-Ocean is its range of specialty sizes. Collections like Carmel, Malibu, Ravella, Sonoma, and Sorrento offer hard-to-find square sizes that work beautifully under a casual dining or kitchen table, and many designs come in rounds and runners too. Choosing the Right Trans-Ocean Construction

• Power-loomed polypropylene rugs, like Carmel and Malibu, are the easiest to clean and the best choice for exposed patios and wet areas.
• Hand-hooked rugs, like Ravella and Frontporch, have a looped, textured surface and work well on covered porches and in casual rooms.
• Handwoven flatweaves, like Sorrento and Sonoma, are thin, reversible in some styles, and great for layering or high-traffic spots.
• Hand-tufted wool rugs, like Corsica, Piazza, and Tivoli, are soft and plush and belong indoors.

Trans-Ocean for Your Home and Office

At home, Trans-Ocean rugs bring coastal color to lanais, porches, kitchens, mudrooms, and kids' spaces, and the wool collections add softness to living rooms and bedrooms. For offices, waiting rooms, and hospitality spaces with a coastal or casual feel, the power-loomed collections clean up easily and handle busy traffic. I'll help you choose a construction that fits your traffic.

Caring for Your Trans-Ocean Rug

• Shake out or sweep outdoor rugs often, and hose them off when needed. Let them dry completely, flat, before putting them back.
• In rainy seasons, lift outdoor rugs so the floor underneath can dry.
• Vacuum indoor wool rugs regularly. Expect some shedding from new hand-tufted rugs.
• Blot spills right away with a clean white cloth, and never rub.
• Use an indoor-outdoor rug pad to keep rugs in place.
• See my rug care guide for each fiber.
