Square Area Rugs

Square Area Rugs: The Perfect Fit for Square Rooms and Tables

Some rooms simply don't want a rectangle. A square dining table, a square sunroom, a sectional that wraps around a coffee table, or a foyer that is as wide as it is deep all look best with a rug that matches their shape. A square area rug fills the space evenly, lines up with your furniture, and makes the whole room feel balanced.

I'm Janice Wells, the Rug Goddess, and I have spent 25+ years helping home and office clients find rugs that truly fit. Square rugs are harder to find than rectangles, and the size you need, whether that's a 6x6, 8x8, 10x10, or something in between, isn't always available ready-made. That's where my custom work comes in.

Below, I walk you through where square rugs work best, how to size one, the collections in this category, and the questions you ask me most.

Where a Square Rug Works Best

• Under a square dining or kitchen table, so every chair stays on the rug.
• In a square living room or great room, where a rectangle leaves awkward gaps on two sides.
• Under a sectional and square coffee table, to anchor the whole seating group.
• In a sunroom, lanai, or patio, with an indoor-outdoor square rug.
• In an entry or foyer that is close to square in shape.
• In a playroom, where a square rug creates a defined play zone.
• In an office, under a square conference table or in a reception seating area.

How to Size a Square Area Rug

Square rugs under a dining table

Add 48 inches to the width of your table. That gives you 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when you pull them out.

• 36 inch square table: 7x7 or 8x8 rug
• 42 to 48 inch square table: 8x8 rug
• 54 to 60 inch square table: 9x9 or 10x10 rug
• 72 inch square table: 10x10 rug or larger

Square rugs in a living room

In a square room, leave about 12 to 18 inches of floor showing between the rug and the walls. In most living rooms that means an 8x8, 10x10, or 12x12 rug. Make sure at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug so the seating feels connected.

Common square rug sizes

• 4x4 to 6x6: entries, reading corners, and under a small table
• 8x8: dining tables for four and smaller seating areas
• 10x10: larger dining tables and most square living rooms
• 12x12 and larger: great rooms and large sectionals, often made custom

Designer patterns

The Genesis collection from Jaipur Living offers modern and transitional patterns in square sizes for living and dining rooms.

Custom squares cut from broadloom

For the exact size you need, I often recommend a custom square cut from broadloom and finished on the edges. Stanton styles in this collection include Zaza Wave, a subtle leopard, Xanadu, Theodore Stripe, Stillwater, Gotham Cheetah, King Cheetah, Musical Ocean, Clifton, Astro, Baltimore, Aerial, and the Kariba flatweave. Stanton broadloom comes in rolls 13'2" or 15' wide depending on the style, which makes large squares possible. The Couristan Insley wool can also be made as a custom rug. Square Rug or Round Rug?

Both can work under a square table. A square rug mirrors the table and gives every chair the same amount of room, which feels tailored and orderly. A round rug softens the corners and feels more relaxed. In a room with lots of straight lines, I often like a round. In a room that already has curves, a square brings structure. During a consultation, I can show you both in your space.

My Tips for Styling a Square Rug

• Center the rug on your table, light fixture, or seating group, not just on the room.
• Line the edges up with your furniture so everything feels intentional.
• In an open floor plan, use a square rug to define one zone, then coordinate the colors with the rugs around it.
• Choose a pattern that works from every side, since a square rug is seen from all four directions.
• Always use a rug pad cut to the size of the rug to keep it flat and in place.

See Your Square Rug Before You Buy

Because the right square size is so specific, I recommend measuring with an expert. I offer in-home consultations in Tampa, Central Florida, and Kansas City, and virtual consultations everywhere else. With RoomVo, you can see a rug in a photo of your own room, and many rugs come in sample sizes so you can feel the fiber and see the true color.

I work with exclusive brands and designer collections, and my custom capabilities mean you never have to settle for a size that almost fits.
