Production Methods

There are three main types of circle rug construction: 

1. Hand-knotted: This ancient process takes skill and precision. Thousands of knots are tied individually on a loom, creating an incredibly durable rug. Because of the labor-intensive process, intricate designs are created. These are literally a work of art.

2. Hand-tufted: Similar to knotting, this manual process pushes yarn through a backing to create the pile. Then, the glue secures the tufts of yarn, making this style faster to produce, thus cheaper. This is usually a thicker pile vs. a hand-knotted round rug.

3. Machine-made: These are made quickly, so you often save money, but they lack the quality, intricacy, and durability of handmade rugs. These rugs typically feature synthetic materials, but there are also wool machine-made rugs available. 

Size Matters: A Measuring Guide 

First things, first: make sure to measure your furniture! If you are placing an accent round rug on top of wall-to-wall carpeting and the rug is the same size as your furniture, or even slightly larger, it will make your room look cluttered. So size is critical! The general rule of thumb is to allow for 10” to 12” on all sides to show the carpeting underneath.

You may also want to consider adding more carpeting to the room, depending on its layout. For example, extend a sitting area with a circular carpet that sits underneath a couch and flows through to a fireplace or table. This also protects the floor in front of a sofa, which is often a high-wear area. 

A round rug in a dining room adds an inviting aesthetic, but consider the table leaf extensions when figuring size. The rug should extend outward from the largest possible instance to bring the room together for those special occasions or large family gatherings. Rule of thumb: add an extra 2 ft.- 2 ft. on all sides of the table so the chairs will stay on the rug when pulled out to use.
