Stair runner rugs add a beautiful aesthetic to spaces ranging from modern to rustic farmhouses. Because they can be customized to provide a minimalist or bold vibe, clients use them to either downplay or draw attention to staircases. 

Types of Stair Runners

Continuous Runners: This is a clean look that runs the entire length of the staircase, including the landings, and is sold in 100 ft rolls, also referred to as roll runners. Usually, a portion of the flooring is exposed on either side, but there are no breaks from top to bottom. A continuous stair runner reduces noise and improves traction.

Individual Treads: This type of tread covers each step individually on the horizontal surface, almost like a mini carpet for each step. This means they don't always go full width or depth, but they offer a clean, structured look to any staircase. It makes tread replacement easier and can be easier to clean.

Complete Stair: Full stair treads are individual carpet pieces for each step as well, but typically cover the full length and depth. They are also easily replaceable, offering flexibility and ease of maintenance.

Wool

• Benefits: wool is the most common because it's soft, durable, retains color well, provides good traction, and is stain-resistant.

• Downside: dense wool is susceptible to dirt accumulation, so that it may require more frequent cleaning and vacuuming.

Polypropylene and Nylon

• Benefits: both are durable and easy to clean. Nylon is more slip-resistant than polypropylene and withstands heavy foot traffic.

• Downside: these materials are durable, but not as durable as wool or natural fibers, so they don't last as long. With traffic, they tend to create static electricity that attracts dust & dirt particles. 

Natural Fibers

• Benefits: very durable, and fibers like jute and sisal are popular. They are also static-free, allergy-friendly, and easy to clean. Jute adds a rustic feel.

• Downside: can gather a lot of dust, so may require more frequent vacuuming.

• Budget: We offer a wide range of prices to suit your needs. For example, polypropylene is typically less expensive than nylon but less durable. Jute is a natural fiber that is relatively inexpensive and static-free. Contact us for details on all our options, and we'll be happy to work within your budget.

• Maintenance: Cleaning some materials is easier than others. We will guide you on which ones require light spot cleaning and on the differences between piles. Certain materials attract dirt and dust, requiring regular vacuuming, whereas others require less frequent attention. 

• Style preferences: some materials take to dye and color really well and will last over a long period. Persian-style rugs and runners are known for their bright and bold color combinations and intricate patterns. Nylon tends to feature more intricate patterns, such as animal prints or geometric designs. If you want more natural colors, let us know during the consultation.

Measuring Guide

Proper measurements are important to avoid bunched-up stair runner rugs. Inaccurate measurements can cause them to slide around, which looks sloppy and poses a safety issue. When in doubt, call us to install for perfect placement. 

Here are some general rules. Remember to consider the width, landings, and turns as well. 

1. Measure the depth, which is the horizontal distance from the front to the back (including a lip).

2. Measure the height of each step, which is the vertical distance from the top of one step to the top of the next.

3. Add these two lengths together.

4. Count the number of stairs and multiply by the length to find the total runner length.

There are two types of installation methods for modern stair carpet runners: waterfall and wrapped.

• A waterfall installation is an effective way to showcase your runner. This method involves not tucking the edge of the runner under each stair nose, which creates a downward waterfall effect.

• A wrapped installation involves tucking the edges of the runner under each stair nose and securing it with a nail gun. This option is generally preferred when you want a more modern, clean-lined look for your stair runner. Or if you are seeing the set of stairs from a side view, it tends to look better and more finished.
