Couristan is a family-owned American rug and carpet company founded in New York in 1926, known for hand-knotted and woven wool rugs, performance indoor-outdoor rugs, stair runners, and broadloom that can be cut to custom sizes. In 2026, Couristan celebrates 100 years in the rug and carpet business.

I'm Janice Wells, the Rug Goddess, and Couristan is one of the most versatile lines I offer. About Couristan

Couristan was founded in 1926 by the Couri brothers as an importer of Persian rugs, and it remains family owned today. Over the past century, it has grown into a leading maker of area rugs, residential carpet, stair runners, and contract carpet for hospitality and commercial spaces. Couristan's headquarters and showroom are in Fort Lee, New Jersey, with a large distribution center in Dalton, Georgia.

Couristan offers a wide range of constructions, including hand-knotted, Wilton woven, Axminster, hand-loomed, hand-tufted, and structured flatweave, in both wool and performance synthetics. That range is exactly why I love it. I can match the right construction to how you live.

My Favorite Couristan Collections

Hand-knotted wool

The Couristan Norway collection is hand-knotted of 100% sustainable, undyed natural wool, with larger knots that create a soft high-low texture. The Ciora collection is hand-knotted of sustainable wool in a casual chunky construction with a carved finish. The Hudson collection brings linear, architectural designs with a hint of tribal, and the Hamadan collection is hand-knotted of 100% wool in vintage-style Kazak designs with short fringed ends.

Woven wool classics

The Old World Classics collection is made in Belgium of semi-worsted New Zealand wool and face-to-face Wilton woven, for traditional designs with crisp detail. The Kashimar collection was designed to recreate the look of a hand-knotted Persian rug at a more approachable price. Hand-tufted, hand-woven and dhurrie

The Lotus collection is hand-tufted of 100% hand-spun New Zealand wool in oversized modern block patterns. The Simone collection is 100% wool in a woven dhurrie construction with the casual look of a kilim. The Kalbarri collection is hand-woven of a wool, cotton, polyester, and rayon blend with digitally printed designs inspired by hand-knotted rugs. The Joshua collection is hand-woven in India of recycled PET fibers with a nubby, gently worn look.

Indoor-outdoor performance rugs

Couristan is one of my favorite sources for lanais and patios. The Cape collection is made of fiber-enhanced Courtron polypropylene, a weather-resistant performance fiber, in high-low textures. The Charm collection is Courtron polypropylene in a structured flatweave that is pet-friendly. The Recife collection is designed to complement outdoor furniture, and the Castille collection is made in Belgium as a flatweave of outdoor polyester and poly-chenille. Cowhide

The Couristan Chalet collection is made of 100% natural, ethically sourced cowhide leather in flatwoven designs with a felt backing. You can see these in my flatweave, jute and animal print rugs.

Stair runners

Couristan offers a beautiful range of stair runners, including Marina, Murano, Vivar, Kashimar, Timeless Treasures, and Antique Turkoman, along with the Cape Town animal print runners in cheetah, leopard, zebra stripe, antelope, and alligator print. Wilton, Axminster and Hand-Knotted: What's the Difference?

• Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot by skilled weavers. They take the longest to make and can last for generations.
• Wilton woven rugs are woven on a Wilton loom, which produces a dense, durable pile with crisp, detailed patterns.
• Axminster rugs are woven on a loom that can place many colors in one design, which makes them ideal for rich traditional patterns and busy spaces.
• Hand-tufted rugs are made by punching yarn through a backing. They offer plush comfort and design at a more approachable price.

Custom Sizes and Shapes

Couristan broadloom can be cut to custom dimensions and finished into an area rug, round, square, or runner, and the Insley wool can be made into almost any size or shape. Caring for Your Couristan Rug

• Vacuum regularly. Use suction only on hand-knotted, high-low, and loop textures.
• Blot spills right away with a clean white cloth, and never rub.
• Indoor-outdoor rugs can usually be hosed off and dried flat. Check the care label first.
• Rotate your rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
