Kids Area Rugs
Kids Area Rugs for Nurseries, Bedrooms, and Playrooms
Kids rugs are area rugs chosen for nurseries, children's bedrooms, and playrooms, where they need to be soft enough for floor time, tough enough for spills and traffic, and fun enough that your child loves the room. The right one cushions tumbles, quiets footsteps, defines a play zone, and still looks good in your home years from now.
Buying a rug for your child's room involves more than finding a cheerful pattern. You are also choosing a fiber, a pile height, a size, and a backing that has to hold up to crawling, block towers, juice cups, and the occasional craft project. After 25+ years of helping families and businesses choose rugs, I can tell you the most common mistake is buying for the pattern and forgetting about the cleanup.
Whether you are decorating a first nursery, refreshing a big kid's bedroom, or setting up a playroom that has to survive the whole neighborhood, I will help you choose a rug that fits your child's age, your household, and your budget. Many of the rugs above come in sample sizes, so you can feel the texture and see the color in your own light before you commit.
Kids Rugs, Nursery Rugs, and Playroom Rugs: What's the Difference?
People search for all three, and they overlap, but each room asks something different of the rug.
- Nursery rugs are about softness and calm. Babies spend time on the floor for tummy time and first crawls, and you spend time on the floor with them. A soft, low pile wool or tightly tufted rug in a gentle palette is usually the right call.
- Kids bedroom rugs carry personality. This is where a playful animal, a bold stripe, or a favorite color makes the room feel like theirs, while the rug still has to handle daily traffic and the occasional spill.
- Playroom rugs are about durability and function. Low pile or flatweave constructions keep toy cars rolling and block towers standing, and easy-clean fibers matter more here than anywhere else in the house.
One rug can sometimes do two of these jobs. Part of a consultation is figuring out which job matters most in your room so the rug you choose is still working for you in five years.
Kids Rug Styles We Love
Playful animals
The Novogratz Atticus collection from Momeni features a teddy bear, a giraffe, a whale, and a lion in 100% wool. Animal rugs make a nursery or toddler room feel special without committing every other piece of decor to a theme.
Ocean and sea creatures
Turtles, starfish, and ocean scenes from the Liora Manne Capri and Ravella collections by Trans-Ocean are a natural fit for coastal homes and for children who love marine life. Many of these are made for indoor and outdoor use, which makes them easy to live with in a busy kids' space.
Stripes and checks
Stripes and checkerboards read as playful in a child's room and grown-up everywhere else, which gives them a long life. The Liora Manne Sonoma Malibu Stripe and the Trans Ocean Savannah Checkerboard, hand-tufted in wool with a cut and loop texture, are two favorites.
Soft solids and neutrals that grow with them
If you want a rug that moves from nursery to big kid room to teen room, start with a solid or a quiet texture and let bedding and art carry the theme. The hand-knotted Saga collection from Jaipur Living, the undyed wool Antrim Zambezi flatweaves from Stanton, and the plush KAS Hue collection all work this way. Browse our solid and textured rugs for more.
Color and geometry
Graphic shapes and saturated color, like the Momeni Delhi and Scandi collections or the hand-tufted KAS Eternity rugs, energize a playroom and give kids an imaginative landscape to play on. See our modern and contemporary rugs for more of this look.
Soft pastels and tribal motifs
Pastel Southwestern and tribal designs, like the hand-hooked wool Momeni Tahoe and the Harper and Margaux collections, give a nursery or girl's room a modern twist on classic pinks and soft greys. Our Moroccan and Southwest rugs carry more of this style.
Shag for cozy corners
A shag rug, like the Novogratz Retro multicolor shag, makes a wonderful reading nook or teen hangout. I steer families away from shag in the main playroom, though, because small toys disappear into it. Browse our shag rugs for cozy spaces.
Kids Rug Materials: The Honest Pros and Cons
The fiber you choose decides how the rug cleans, how it feels, and how long it lasts. Here is how I talk about it with parents.
- Wool. Naturally resilient, soft underfoot, flame resistant, and more forgiving with spills than most people expect, thanks to the natural lanolin in the fiber. It costs more up front and lasts for years. My first choice for nurseries and bedrooms. Read Rug Mentality: Why Not Wool?
- Polypropylene (olefin). Durable, stain resistant because the fiber does not absorb liquid, and easy to clean with a damp cloth. It is a great value for playrooms and basements, though it is not as soft or as long lived as wool.
- Polyester. Soft, colorful, and fade resistant, with good stain resistance. It can crush in heavy traffic areas over time, so I like it best in bedrooms rather than main play zones.
- Flatweaves and cotton. Thin, light, and easy to shake out, with nothing for crumbs to hide in. They need a good rug pad to stay put and add cushion. See our flatweave and jute rugs.
Construction matters too. Hand-tufted and hand-hooked wool rugs give you a soft, substantial feel at a reasonable price. Flatweaves keep a low profile for active play. Hand-knotted rugs are an heirloom choice for a nursery you hope to pass down. Our post on which area rugs are best compares the options in more detail.
How to Choose the Right Kids Rug
Size
In a nursery, an 8 x 10 often ties the crib, dresser, and glider into one comfortable zone, while a 5 x 8 works well in a smaller room or under the glider alone. In a kids bedroom, place the rug under the lower two thirds of the bed so your child steps onto something soft from either side. In a playroom, go as large as the room allows, leaving 12 to 24 inches of floor showing around the edges. Our Complete Area Rug Size Guide and our post on where to place an area rug cover every room.
Pile height
Low pile and flatweave rugs are best where kids play on the floor, because toys stay upright and crumbs vacuum out easily. Medium pile wool adds comfort in a nursery or bedroom. Save high pile and shag for reading corners and teen rooms.
Color and pattern
Multicolor patterns hide everyday spots far better than a solid, which is why they work so well with young children. Coordinate the rug with the room's main color rather than matching every accent, and choose a theme you can live with as your child grows. Read how to pick the right colored area rug before you decide.
Safety and peace of mind
Always put a quality rug pad under a kids rug. It keeps the rug from sliding when little ones run across it, adds cushioning for falls, and protects your floor. If you are concerned about what a rug is made of, natural fibers like wool are a good place to start, and I am happy to check the specifications and certifications of any rug you are considering.
Rooms Where Kids Rugs Work
Nursery
Soft, calm, and comfortable for you and the baby. A wool rug in a gentle palette gives you a warm place for tummy time and story time, and it absorbs sound so naps stay quieter. Our post on whether area rugs help with noise explains why.
Toddler and kids bedrooms
This is where personality comes in. A playful animal, a sea creature, or a favorite color makes the room theirs. If the room is carpeted, you can still layer a rug on top. See can you put an area rug on top of carpet.
Playrooms and bonus rooms
Durability first. Low pile, stain resistant fibers and a generous size give your kids room to spread out. For a lower level playroom, read how to choose the right rug for your basement, and consider indoor-outdoor rugs where moisture or heavy spills are a concern.
Teen rooms
Teens want a room that feels grown up. Solids, textures, stripes, and shag give them a space to hang out that will not feel babyish next year.
Shared family spaces
If your living room doubles as a play space, a round rug or a durable patterned rug can define a play corner without taking over the room.
Rugs for Schools, Daycares, and Pediatric Offices
Classrooms, daycares, church nurseries, children's libraries, and pediatric and dental waiting rooms need rugs that look welcoming and survive far more traffic than any home. We help you specify durable constructions with bound edges for commercial use, sizes that fit your circle time or waiting area, and colors that work with your space and brand. Custom sizes and custom designs, including a logo or a learning pattern, are available when a stock rug does not fit.
Custom Kids Rugs
Some rooms need something no one stocks: an extra large playroom, an odd shaped attic bedroom, or a rug that matches a favorite wallpaper or bedding pattern. We create custom sizes, shapes, and colors, and a custom design can even be built around your child's favorite animal or artwork. See our custom project gallery for what is possible.
Caring for Your Kids Rug
- Use a rug pad to keep the rug in place, cushion falls, and add years of life. Read why your area rug needs a pad.
- Blot spills right away with a clean, damp cloth. Never rub, which pushes the stain deeper.
- Vacuum often, especially in playrooms where crumbs and grit wear fibers down.
- Consider ForceField protection, which makes spills far easier to clean.
- Rotate the rug once or twice a year so traffic and sun wear it evenly.
