Runner Rugs

Runner Rugs for Hallways, Kitchens, and Every Long Space

A runner rug is a long, narrow rug, usually about 2 to 3 feet wide and 6 to 14 feet long, made for hallways, kitchens, entries, and the space beside a bed. It protects your floors where traffic is heaviest, softens footsteps, and turns a passthrough into a finished part of your home.

Runners work harder than almost any other rug in the house. They take daily foot traffic, kitchen spills, wet shoes, and pets, all in a narrow strip that has to lie flat and stay put. After 25+ years of helping home and office clients, I can tell you the most common mistakes are the wrong length and skipping the rug pad. Both are easy to get right with a little guidance.

I will help you choose the right size, fiber, and style for your space, and when no stock runner fits, we make one to your exact length. Many of the runners above come in sample sizes, including custom runners.

Runner Rugs vs. Stair Runners

The two names get mixed up, but they are different products:

  • A runner rug lies flat on the floor in a hallway, kitchen, entry, or bedroom. It comes in stock sizes or custom lengths and needs only a rug pad underneath.
  • A stair runner wraps over each tread and down each riser and is installed in place. It is measured and fitted to your staircase. See our stair runners and custom runners.

Many homes use both. Coordinating a hall runner with a stair runner so they relate in color and texture is one of my favorite parts of this work.

Where Runner Rugs Work Best

Hallways and entries

A runner is the first thing you and your guests see when you come home. It adds color to a long, narrow space without clutter, protects the floor in your busiest path, and quiets footsteps. Our post on whether rugs help with noise explains why halls feel calmer with one.

Kitchens

A kitchen runner cushions your feet where you stand the most, in front of the sink, stove, or island, and catches the drips and crumbs that come with cooking. Choose a low pile, easy-clean fiber and a pad that grips well.

Bedrooms

A runner along each side or at the foot of the bed gives you a soft place to step every morning, and it is easier to clean than a large rug hidden under the bed.

Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and galley spaces

Long, narrow rooms are natural runner territory. Indoor-outdoor and synthetic runners handle moisture and spills best here.

Living spaces and lofts

A runner behind a sofa, along a window seat, or across a long open path protects the floor and helps define how people move through the room.

Runner Rug Sizes and How to Measure

Most stock runners are about 2 to 3 feet wide and 6 to 14 feet long. Here is how I size them with clients:

  • Hallways. Leave about 4 to 5 inches of floor showing on each side and about 18 inches at each end, so the runner looks centered and does not crowd a doorway.
  • Kitchens. Cover your main work zone, such as the run between the sink and the stove, and keep the runner a few inches from the cabinet base so doors and drawers open freely.
  • Bedrooms. Choose a length close to the length of the bed so the runner frames it neatly.
  • Doors. Check the swing of every door along the path. A door that catches the runner will wear a line into it.
  • Very long halls. A single custom length usually looks better than two runners end to end.

Custom runners can be cut from runner goods and broadloom in standard widths such as 26, 30, 36, and 41 inches, then finished to any length you need. Our Complete Area Rug Size Guide and our post on where to place an area rug cover the rest of the house.

Runner Styles We Love

Textured stripes and solids

The Grand Textures collection from Nourison comes in rich colors such as tobacco, cayenne, marina, linen, and pasture, with a texture that hides everyday wear. It works in a hall and on the stairs, which makes coordinating the two easy.

Natural fibers

Jute runners, like the Naturals Tobago collection from Jaipur Living, bring warm, casual texture to entries and farmhouse kitchens. See our flatweave and jute rugs.

Indoor-outdoor and coastal

The Cape and Charm collections from Couristan and the Liora Manne Sorrento and Capri collections from Trans-Ocean are made for spills, moisture, and sun. They are smart choices for kitchens, mudrooms, and lanai entries. Browse our indoor-outdoor rugs.

Wool texture

The sculpted Canyon and carved Asher collections from Momeni bring soft wool and subtle dimension to bedrooms and quieter halls. See more in our solid and textured rugs.

Soft modern and traditional

Nourison Silk Shadows offers a gentle, modern sheen, while classic wool designs suit traditional homes. If you want a pattern, a traditional or transitional runner hides traffic beautifully.

Custom wool runners

For a tailored look, a wool runner cut to your exact length, such as the Couristan Insley wool stair runner and custom rug, gives you a runner that fits the space perfectly.

Runner Materials and Durability

  • Wool. Resilient, soft, and naturally soil resistant. My favorite for hallways and bedrooms.
  • Nylon. Very durable and resists crushing in heavy traffic, at a lower price than wool.
  • Polypropylene and indoor-outdoor fibers. Stain resistant and easy to rinse. Ideal for kitchens, mudrooms, and bathrooms.
  • Jute and sisal. Beautiful natural texture, best in dry, moderate-traffic areas, since they can stain when wet.

Looking for a washable runner? Many indoor-outdoor runners can be hosed off and dried flat. Before you put any rug in a washing machine, read are area rugs machine washable, and ask me about easy-clean options for your space.

Keep Your Runner in Place

A runner that slides is a safety problem, especially in a hall or kitchen. Always use a quality rug pad cut slightly smaller than the runner. It keeps the runner from creeping, cushions every step, and protects your floor. Read why free rug pad offers fall short and how to pick the right rug pad.

Runners for Offices and Commercial Spaces

Office corridors, reception halls, hotel hallways, and restaurant entries see far more traffic than a home. We specify durable constructions with bound edges for commercial use, coordinate colors with your brand and interior, and make custom lengths for long corridors. Matching runners across multiple floors is a project we manage from measurement to delivery.

Custom Runner Rugs

When your hall is longer than any stock runner, or you want a runner to match an area rug in the next room, custom is the answer. We cut and finish runners to your exact length and width, and we can coordinate color and pattern across rooms. See our custom project gallery, and read Custom Stair Runners: Size & Installation if your project includes stairs.

Caring for Your Runner Rug

  • Vacuum often. Grit in a hallway or entry wears fibers down faster than foot traffic alone.
  • Blot spills right away with a clean, damp cloth. Never rub.
  • Rotate the runner every few months so wear and sun fade stay even.
  • Add a mat outside the door to stop dirt before it reaches the runner.
  • Consider ForceField protection for entries and kitchens.

Frequently Asked Questions About Runner Rugs

What is a runner rug?

A runner rug is a long, narrow rug, usually about 2 to 3 feet wide and 6 to 14 feet long, designed for hallways, kitchens, entries, and the sides of beds. It protects floors in high-traffic paths, softens footsteps, and adds color and texture to spaces that a standard rectangle cannot fit.

What size runner do I need for a hallway?

Leave about 4 to 5 inches of floor showing on each side of the runner and about 18 inches at each end. That keeps the runner centered and clear of doorways. Measure the hall's width and length, subtract those margins, and you have your runner size. If the hall is very long, a custom length is usually the best answer.

How long should a kitchen runner be?

A kitchen runner should cover your main work zone, such as the stretch between the sink and the stove or the length of an island. In a galley kitchen, it can run most of the room's length. Keep it a few inches from the cabinet base so doors and drawers open freely, and always use a pad underneath.

What is the standard size of a runner rug?

Most stock runner rugs are about 2 to 3 feet wide, with common lengths of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 feet. Exact sizes vary by collection. When none of those fit your space, we can make a custom runner to your exact length, often in widths such as 26, 30, 36, or 41 inches.

Can I get a custom length runner?

Yes. We cut and finish custom runners to your exact length and width, which is ideal for long hallways, unusual entries, and matching a runner to an area rug in the next room. Custom runners can be made from runner goods and broadloom in many colors, textures, and fibers.

What is the difference between a runner rug and a stair runner?

A runner rug lies flat on the floor in a hallway, kitchen, or bedroom and needs only a rug pad. A stair runner wraps over each tread and down each riser and is installed in place, so it is measured and fitted to your staircase. Many homes coordinate both so the entry and stairs feel connected.

What is the best material for a hallway runner?

Wool and nylon are the best materials for hallway runners. Wool is resilient, soft, and naturally soil resistant, while nylon resists crushing in very heavy traffic. For hallways that lead from a garage or pool, an indoor-outdoor or polypropylene runner is easier to clean. A textured or patterned surface hides everyday wear best.

Are runner rugs washable?

Some are. Many indoor-outdoor runners can be hosed off and dried flat, which makes them great for kitchens and mudrooms. Most wool and tufted runners should not go in a washing machine, so check the care label first. Blotting spills right away and regular vacuuming keep any runner looking fresh.

How do I keep a runner from slipping?

Use a quality rug pad cut slightly smaller than the runner on every side. A good pad grips the floor, keeps the runner from creeping or bunching, and cushions each step. Thin rubber backings and low-quality pads wear out quickly, so a dedicated pad is worth it, especially in halls and kitchens.

Should a runner match the area rug in the next room?

It should coordinate, not necessarily match. Repeat one or two colors from the area rug, or choose a runner with a similar texture or pattern scale, so the spaces feel connected. In open floor plans, coordinated rugs make your home feel designed, and a custom runner can be made to match an existing rug exactly.

Do runner rugs damage hardwood floors?

Not when you use the right pad. A quality rug pad protects hardwood from scratches and keeps grit from grinding into the finish. Avoid pads with harsh adhesives or certain rubber backings that can discolor some finishes. Rotate the runner now and then so the floor ages evenly under sunlight.

Can I use two runners in a long hallway?

You can, but one continuous runner usually looks better. If you do use two, leave equal space between them and at each end, and choose matching runners so the hall reads as one design. For very long halls, a custom-length runner is the cleanest solution.

What runner rug is best for pets?

Low pile, cut pile, or flatweave runners in wool, nylon, or polypropylene are best with pets. Avoid loose loops, which claws can snag. A pattern or textured surface hides pet hair and paw traffic, and a protector such as ForceField makes accidents easier to clean.

Do you make runners for offices and commercial hallways?

Yes. Office corridors, reception halls, hotel hallways, and restaurant entries need runners built for heavy traffic, with bound edges for commercial use. We make custom lengths for long corridors, coordinate colors with your brand, and can match runners across multiple floors.
